Most Lake Ronkonkoma, NY property owners don’t think twice about flushing their toilets or drains; the water just disappears as if by magic, never to be seen again. Rather than disappearing into thin air, that water flows down pipes to a buried septic tank. When it comes to their septic system, most people have an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality since it isn’t visible, and unfortunately, they pay the price for it. The United States experiences tens of thousands of cesspool overflows each year. In addition to causing serious property damage, these overflows can have devastating effects on the environment.

Septic overflows can be avoided, fortunately. Exactly how? By hiring a reputable company like Quality Cesspool to perform routine septic tank maintenance.

What is involved in septic tank services?

Exactly what does septic tank service entail? These inspections include a thorough examination of the wastewater collection system. A professional should inspect the system every three to five years, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). To ensure the system is functioning properly, the entire system, including the tank, the filtration system, and the drain field, will be inspected.

The EPA recommends cleaning and pumping septic tanks every three to five years in addition to inspections. In the course of pumping and cleaning, special equipment is used to remove wastewater accumulated in the tank as well as sludge and scum on the walls.

The Benefits of Professional Septic Tank Services

Some of the top benefits of having your Lake Ronkonkoma, NY septic tank professionally serviced include:

  • Detection and correction of any issues. By having your septic tank serviced by a professional, any issues, such as cracks and blockages, can be detected and corrected before they cause dangerous and costly problems.
  • Proper septic tank usage tips. A professional will provide you with tips that will help you keep your septic system in tip-top condition; things you shouldn’t flush down your drains and toilets and how to maintain the balance of healthy bacteria, for example. An experienced professional will also be able to advise you on any lifestyle habits that are currently being practiced in your Lake Ronkonkoma, NY home or business that might need to be changed.
  • Improved safety. Sewage backups aren’t just costly messes; they can be extremely dangerous. Raw sewage is full of harmful bacteria, parasites, and viruses. Exposure to raw sewage can lead to Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, and other serious and even fatal health conditions. By having your septic system pumped, cleaned, and inspected, the risk of overflow and the health concerns that can be associated with sewage exposure can be minimized.
  • Cost savings. The cost of repairing the damages that are associated with sewage backups can be exorbitant. Since a professional can detect and correct any underlying problems before they become major issues and because accumulated wastewater will be removed from the tank before it reaches capacity, having your septic system professionally serviced can save you a lot of money in the long run.
  • Greater peace of mind. By having your septic tank properly cared for, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your drains will flow freely and that there will be less risk of a costly and potentially dangerous overflow.
Have a question?

The actual lake, Lake Ronkonkoma, adjacent to the CDP, is the largest lake on Long Island. The land surrounding one side of the lake is in the jurisdiction of the Town of Islip. The elevation of the lake surface is given as 55 feet (17 m) on the most recent USGS map, but as the lake is a “groundwater lake”, not fed by streams, it has no surface outlet and its water surface reflects the current level of the local water table. This can undergo significant changes over time, and the lake level experiences slow periods of rise and fall. In the late 1960s it was quite low; after several intermediate changes in level, in 2007 the lake was higher than at any time since, with a difference of well over 5 feet (1.5 m) between the 1960s low and the 2007 high.

As a result of the lake’s existence, Lake Ronkonkoma was once a resort town, until the area experienced a population explosion in the mid-20th century. Remnants of old resorts and hotels can still be seen around the lake’s shores. Many summer cottages and bungalows from that period remain, now converted to year-round use.

The lake is the subject of a number of urban legends, mainly rooted in the area’s rich Native American heritage. For example: 1. “It’s bottomless” (and/or empties into Long Island Sound or other waterways). In fact, the lake is relatively deep (approx. 65 feet (20 m)) at its southeastern side, and is accordingly known as a kettle hole lake. 2. “Every year the lake sacrifices someone.” Or more specifically, Princess Ronkonkoma “The Lady of the Lake” calls young men out to the middle of the lake and drowns them. In all versions, the lady is an Indian princess who herself drowned in the lake, for reasons that vary depending on the story. The most popular version is that every year the lake claims one male victim. Articles suggest that in the past 200 years, only a handful of females have drowned in Lake Ronkonkoma. 3. “There is a mysterious rise and fall of the lake that doesn’t have any noticeable relationship to local rainfall totals.” This has not been sufficiently explained either way.
